Faith is a powerful force in the lives of so many Americans

The visit of Pope Benedict to the U.S. is a reminder of what a powerful force faith is in the lives of so many Americans. Many of us have seen the images on television of the thousands lining the streets of our nation's capitol, just to catch a glimpse of the Holy Father. It should be obvious that the tens of millions of deeply religious men and women in our great country do not "cling" to religion because they are "bitter." No, indeed, the reality is quite the contrary. The overwhelming majority of people in our great country turn to their faith as a source of optimism, a spiritual anchor to help guide their lives in both good times and bad.

The faithful in our country--whether they are in small towns or urban centers--deserve the respect of our politicians. Their values are the values that made America great and that keep her strong. If I am lucky enough to be elected to represent the people of Illinois in the U.S. Senate I will fight to return those values to Washington.
