End devastating cuts to public colleges and universities
In Maryland, our public colleges and universities have endured devastating funding cuts over the past two years, forcing tuition increases of more than 30% and putting an even heavier burden on the backs of students and parents to come up with the money
for college. At the same time, Maryland's private colleges and universities are forced to compete even harder for non-state resources and research dollars and attention.
As a member of the governing Boards of both Morgan State University and
Johns Hopkins University, I have come to understand first hand the challenges and opportunities facing both our private and public institutions of higher learning. For over 25 years I have developed and demonstrated a record of fighting for educational
opportunity.
As your next United States Senator, I promise you that I will continue to work to achieve the funding and support that colleges and universities need as they train and prepare the work force of the future.

Committed to strengthening our public schools
I recognize that the future prosperity of our nation lies in the hands of today's students and those who teach them. I am committed to strengthening our public schools by creating a learning
environment where children are safe and have all the tools they need to succeed. All my life I have fought to make education work and I need your support to now take that belief to the United States Senate.

Public schools overcrowded, understaffed & under-equipped
Too many of our public schools are overcrowded, understaffed, and under-equipped. Too many of our children slip through the cracks each day and far too many of our school teachers are underpaid,
overworked and have inadequate pensions to look forward to in retirement.
It is not enough to say that no child should be left behind, we must work to ensure it.
