Bob Tuke on Civil Rights

Democratic challenger

Investigate unsolved civil rights-era murders

The Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act would investigate unsolved murders from the civil rights era. It would create new cold case units at the FBI dedicated to unsolved cases involving criminal civil rights statutes which resulted in death and occurred before 1970. A companion bill in the House passed, but the legislation failed in the Senate thanks in part to Lamar Alexander.

Emmett Till's murder ignited a national groundswell of opposition to racial discrimination that played a role in the beginning stages of the national Civil Rights Movement, and there are many other hate crimes that remain unsolved to this day. We owe it to the victims and their families to investigate these crimes to provide closure, but Lamar Alexander doesn't seem to think so. Bob Tuke will work to provide opportunities at finding justice for the African-American families who have endured years of questions and hardship due to these civil rights cold cases and always work for racial equality and reconciliation.

Federal apology for slavery, to African-American community

Bob Tuke echoed the sentiments of the US House of Representatives in today's resolution, sponsored by Rep. Steve Cohen, apologizing for the slavery and segregation of African-Americans in the United States.

"I am thankful for the efforts in delivering this long overdue apology to the African-American community," said Tuke. "It is my fervent hope and prayer that this resolution brings about another milestone in our nation's effort to fight the remnants of prejudice and bigotry from an era of injustice. As counsel for Meharry Medical College in Nashville, and other clients, I have witnessed the African-American community overcome great obstacles to achieve ever greater accomplishments, and I hope that this progress continues as we pursue equality in all respects so as to become a united community."
