Hagelin supports the federal government using only merits and qualifications in making government contracting decisions. He says he supports “upholding laws guaranteeing equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. Affirmative action should continue
as a temporary measure while the country moves beyond bigotry and racial biases through my improved educational programs. Hiring quotas should not be applied, since they foster race resentment and are demeaning to minorities.”

Moral decisions on gay rights rest with the people
Regarding homosexuality: It’s a question of government non-involvement. Our government has grown so big and so invasive that it’s involving itself in our own moral decisions about how to conduct our lives. These are
difficult moral issues for which we have to turn to our churches and to ourselves, not to any politician to make these decisions for us. Government simply cannot usurp our own ability to govern our lives according to our own moral will.
