Bob Dole on Budget & Economy

Former Republican Senator (KS)

1995 chief legislative goal: Balanced budget

In a February 2nd 1995 interview with The Washington Times, the conservative local newspaper that loved to snip at Dole, The Times carried a big front-page story under a headline that was a kiss: "Dole Works at Reconnecting the Government to the People.'' The paper ran nearly 5,000 words of question and answer. Having absorbed his lesson, and as if he were driving it into his own head with a repetition that was occasionally comic, Dole was quoted as saying, "the basic theme I'm going to talk about" reigning in government, reigning in government.it's government, government" Of his chief legislative goal, he remarked, "Balanced budget, balanced budget," adding, "and you say it over and over and over," as he did.

At Dole headquarters that morning they were walking around with heads high, couldn't have been better. "Wow, it works," Mari Will was excited and told Dole, "Ah, that's the message."

Stop deficit spending and balance the budget

We cannot continue to let this growing burden of debt crush the hopes and the dreams of our children and our grandchildren. That's why one of the defining objectives of Bob Dole's career in the Senate was a balanced budget. Bob Dole has led the Senate for decades in fighting for fiscal responsibility and a balanced budget. A Dole-Kemp Administration will stop reckless deficit spending once and for all--for the good of this generation and all generations that follow.
